Presentation Title:

Evaluation of the effect of Plinia cauliflora on the prevention of osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats

Abstract

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a disease that causes a decrease in bone mass. It affects millions of people in Brazil and in the world and has the characteristic of being silent, which makes the diagnosis late. As with several other diseases, the late diagnosis and, consequently, the worsening of the pathology causes high costs spent for the treatment impact greatly on public health. Considering not only the financial factor, but also the patient's well being, which often presents several side effects with the use of conventional treatments for the disease, the search for natural and complementary therapies should be a constant. Among the natural methods of treatment, herbal therapies stand out with quite promising results. One of the plants that has attracted a lot of attention, for its potent antioxidant action, with potential candidate to prevent osteoporosis is Plinia cauliflora (PC).

Objective: To evaluate, through a model of osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy, the effect of PC extract in the prevention of the disease in rats.

Methodology: The animals were divided into six experimental groups, being one positive control group, one negative control, one sham and 3 groups to test different doses of plant extract.

Result: Considering that the densitometry evaluates the parameters in different body regions, the prolonged treatment with standardized PC extract had an expressive positive result in the leg region, in the three evaluated doses. The prolonged treatment with PC in the three doses significantly increased the serum levels of osteocalcin and moderately the levels of DHEA.

Conclusion: The treatment with PC resulted in an increase in bone mineral density related mainly to the increase of osteocalcin, preserving the bone matrix of ovariectomized rats.
