Isotonic Glucose Injections for Postherpetic Neuralgia in the Elderly
Abstract
Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a painful condition which is difficult to treat, especially among the elderly. This clinical case describes the treatment of an 88-year-old patient with PHN who continued to suffer from pain for several months despite oral and transdermal pain treatment. Multiple intradermal glucose 5% (or dextrose 5%) injections allowed her to discontinue her pain medication regimen after four sessions. The improvement was sustained at the four-month follow-up after the last procedure. A fifth session was performed because of a flaring up of the pain. Long-term follow-up after 12 months showed no pain relapse at all.

Biography
Jan Kersschot is a Belgian physician who has been practicing nonsteroidal injections for musculoskeletal pain for over 30 years. In his pursuit of an effective and safe approach, he developed his own injection techniques over the years. He has lectured, conducted workshops, and taught courses in more than 15 countries. Jan Kersschot practices in a private setting specializing in pain management and sports injuries in Belgium. He is also a member of the European Society of Medicine. With the introduction of Glucopuncture (GP), he offers his colleagues an injection technique that is safe and easy to learn. GP utilizes an injectate that is inexpensive and available worldwide. Due to the affordability of these products and the fact that they cannot be patented, support from the pharmaceutical industry is unlikely. By presenting this technique to his colleagues, he aims to encourage them to incorporate these injections into their practices, improve the technique through their feedback, and spread the message. To facilitate this, a free online GP course is available.
